It’s a new year and I’m hopeful. I’m hopeful that things in the rental market improve as we move further into 2024. Mainly because they can hardly get any worse.
Homelessness is spiking, prompting several regions across Scotland to declare housing emergencies. Tenants are struggling to afford their rent while landlords are increasingly borrowing to pay their mortgages.
The rental market is in the teeth of a perfect storm, precipitated by a shortage of stock and a run-up in interest rates. It doesn’t help that ill-considered policies in Scotland have fueled the highest rent inflation of any region in the UK. Against the backdrop of a cost-of-living crisis and widely held worries of a general unravelling, I can’t help feeling the only way is up.
Our Glasgow Letting Agency is a microcosm of the whole country. It is normal to find the occasional landlord who is unwilling or unable to cover the cost of maintenance on their rental property. I often speak with them to work towards a solution. Lately these conversations have become more frequent, and more fraught.
