– With Simpson Physiotherapy
Hi Everyone
I wanted to answer the above question today, it’s one that (unsurprisingly) I get asked an awful lot!
There are several studies that have shown that people with PD are already 30% less active than their age-matched peers at diagnosis! That’s a BIG gap and the gap becomes greater the longer you have been living with PD. It is well known in the scientific literature that sedentary behaviours are major risk factors in many health issues, from aches and pains to balance and falls. Parkinson’s disease, unfortunately, can cause a cycle of deconditioning which can lead to a worsening of your PD symptoms, resulting in a loss of independence and quality of life.
The amazing thing that is shown in the scientific literature is that by getting neuro active, stronger and fitter, you can change the course of your disease progression. Take, for example, two people, one who starts neuro active exercises after diagnosis and one who does not. Assuming all other things are equal (type of Parkinsons, medication, other medical history, etc.), we know that the person getting and staying neuro active will be in better shape – moving, thinking and feeling better, while taking less medications and staying significantly more active and independent throughout their life with PD.
