I don’t know about you, but for me, one of life’s greatest pleasures is cutting into a perfectly cooked quality steak. Such a luxury and, at least for me, a rarity, that it always feels a little bit special. Given that a top quality steak doesn’t often come cheap, a steak dinner is often reserved for special occasions… until now.

I say this because, whether you can believe it or not, the newly opened Chateau-x is offering diners the chance to enjoy their sharing chateaubriand for a mere £30! I have to be honest, when I heard about this latest venture from the team behind Six by Nico, I had my reservations. If they are charging such a low price for such a quality cut, what sort of standard can the meat really be?

According to the menu, each of their chateaus are hand selected from prime cattle that represent the top 2% of the market in terms of quality, using a mixture of Hereford, Aberdeen Angus and other breeds. So how exactly are they getting away with charging so little, and does the steak really surpass its £30 price tag?

The answer, I am surprised to say, is yes. While I have certainly had superior steaks in my life, the rare piece pre-sliced fillet that arrived at my table was a pleasant surprise, with a tender centre and well-seasoned crust.

However, where Chateau-x has really outdone themselves, and perhaps the secret to their low price steaks, are the sides. If you like to keep things simple, then the standard beef dripping rooster chips are the obvious answer, but if you are in the mood for something more adventurous and delicious, you’re in for a treat.

Think roasted bone marrow and oxtail with a herbaceous parsley crust, or insanely moreish mac and cheese croquettes with chipotle emulsion. Honestly, if you’d simply have given me a bowl of those croquettes, I would have been eternally grateful. Perhaps my favourite side though, much to my surprise, were the beef fat carrots with carrot top and tarragon pesto. These are roast carrots on a whole new level, and I implore you to order them!

What is perhaps deceiving is that although you will be pulled in by the idea of a £30 steak, a meal for two with sides and wine will, in reality, add up to around £75, as each of the sides are individually priced (ranging between £4-7.50). However, given the quality of the sides and sauces, I don’t doubt that Chateau-x is likely to be another resounding success for team Nico.
