The Life and Work of Teresa Latina

Art Exhibitions Glasgow in May
The Scottish Mask and Puppet Theatre is a real West End treasure. With a vast range of puppet shows, magic, children’s theatre and workshops, it really is a little corner of joy. Although it’s main purpose is theatre for children and craft related to the puppet show productions, the centre has, in the past been an exhibition space.
Now, in it’s first exhibition since the pandemic, the Scottish Mask and Puppet Theatre presents a celebration of the work of Polish artist Teresa Latina.
Identity
Born in Krakow in 1945, Teresa moved to Glasgow in 1971. The Gorbals was a very new experience for her and made Teresa have a new perspective on her heritage, on her Polish identity. Driven by this new appreciation, Teresa’s art work was greatly influenced by traditional Polish Folk Art.
Polish Folk Art often portrays themes of folklore, nature and symbolism. With art taking the form of paintings, pottery, sculpture and decorative art, it’s a diverse and beautiful sub-genre.
With an interpretive style all of her own Teresa Latina’s body of work blends the traditional with her own unique flair. Her collection shows a real reflection of the grace and beauty of her Polish heritage.
Window Dressing

Teresa’s eye for art led her to window design for Goldbergs Department Store, where she worked from 1977 until 1983. During this time, Teresa curated all of her work: from the window designs to photographs of Goldberg’s, even back catalogues showing fashion as it evolved.
Goldbergs Department Stores, especially the two flagship stores in Glasgow and Edinburgh were hugely ahead of their time in terms of design. With escalators and enormous windows, they lent themselves to the elaborate window displays they became famous for. As well as innovative window displays to advertise the latest fashion, everyone looked forward to the enormously popular Christmas displays. Enjoying every creative element, was Teresa.
The Exhibition

The Exhibition is running from Saturday the 10th May until Monday 26th May. With lots of activities for the children, there is no need to leave them at home. Other museum displays can be viewed around the building. In the gift shop, specifically brought in from Poland, Polish momento gifts. With gorgeous 3D cards, keyrings, mugs, coasters, baubles and pot trivets, all are emblazened with Polish designs. The cafe will also be open for soup, sandwiches, children’s fun lunch boxes, home-baking and snack platters. Adults can look forward to delicious barista coffee – even an affogato, as ice cream will be on sale too.
The craft activities include colour-in and cut-out puppets and masks from 11AM – 4PM. With lots of designs to choose from, there are even new designs inspired by Teresa’s time at Goldberg’s Department Store. There are loads of designs for the kids to choose from. All materials are provided – felt tips, scissors, hole punches, at the cafe tables.
Nathan, Sarah, Frida (8), and Mabli (3) visited the exhibition over the weekend –
“We came to visit the Teresa Latina exhibition today. It was an absolute joy to visit somewhere run with such love and care. We’ll definitely be back to see a show.
The cut outs in the exhibition really inspired our 8 year old, and as soon as we got home she was a flurry of scissors and glue (photo attached). Long may it continue!
The puppet kits from Teresa’s original designs….the girls really enjoyed colouring and making their versions. It’s a family friendly activity that links directly to the exhibition“.
An exhibition for all.
