Top Things To Do

And so, the onset of Autumn, with its golden hues, falling leaves and crisp autumn walks.  Or it could just be overcast and showery like the last 8 months have been!  I choose to look forward to a traditional autumn… crackling fires beckon!

A Play, A Pie and A Pint launch their Autumn programme in September. It’s a special anniversary programme celebrating 20 years of Autumn seasons at Oran Mor.  The opening show plays homage to the inaugural season in 2004, with a reprisal of Poker Alice written by Still Game’s Greg Hemphill.  There are some cracking productions during the season: Anna/Anastasia sees comedian and writer Jonny Donahoe play Anna Anderson, ‘the greatest imposter of the 20th century’, Catriona MacLeod brings us time-bending drama Blast Off, Starburst and just in time for Halloween, Ghost Off! Tells the tale of Hillhead’s premier psychic.  And that’s merely a sip of the pint…

Along Great Western, Websters Theatre also have some fantastic productions to look forward to. Original play The Glaswegian tells the story of Chuck on his final bus journey through the Glasgow he has known for 70 years. And the welcome return of Clatty Pats – Walk Like a Glaswegian… sees our favourite venue in the 90s.  Prepare to sing-a-long-a-Clattys.

Top For All Things Nautical

Clydebuilt: The Glasgow River Festival returns on the 7th and 8th of September.  Free to enter, this festival has been a staple for many years, celebrating the central artery of our city, the River Clyde.  Scotland’s biggest open water rowing race ‘Castle to Crane’ sees more than 80 boats race from Dumbarton Castle to the Finnieston Crane.  And on Sunday, everyone’s favourite part of the weekend – the Dragon Boat Racing Championships!

With so much to do on the quayside – music, crafts, food – it’s a fab family fun day out with our river front and centre.

Still on a boaty theme – possibly the most famous ship of all time.  The Titanic Exhibition is coming to Glasgow.  The exhibition has artefacts from the Titanic for visitors to see and items from the actual wreck site. Audio visuals tell the fateful story of the building of the ship, the voyage and the passengers. There’s even a Glasgow connection to the ship.  The Exhibition is running for two weeks through October.

Top For Talks

Theatre seems to have entered a new era of unique entertainment, diverse genres and inspirational shows.  Plays, musicals, cabaret – yes. And speakers.  This Autumn there are so many individuals (I’m choosing not to use celebrities) treading the boards of the Glasgow stages to talk about their lives.  First off, at The Pavilion the one and only Graham Norton talks about his new book, Frankie.  It may be interesting for you to know that Graham may have a celebrity tale or two to tell!  Having interviewed some of the biggest stars of stage and screen, Graham will also do a question-and-answer slot – will he spill the gossip?  Let’s see…

And I am thrilled to announce a visit to our fair city from one of my favourite humans.  Michael Palin is coming to The Pavilion Theatre in October to talk about volume four of his diaries, ‘There and Back’, which is published on the 26th of September.  This volume covers the years from 1999 to 2009, a decade filled with of course travel, but emerging new dangers as the twin towers fall.  A mesmerising night is promised and… it’s Michael Palin, so it will be.

Top For September Weekend

Let’s prioritise guys.  Plays, festivals, celebrities…meh.  This September weekend The Big Feed in the Park is coming to Kelvin Way. Now THAT’S an event.  Running on the Saturday and Sunday of the September weekend, the street food festival sees family fun with Big Feed Bairns during the day, then Melting Pot taking the baton as night falls.  In the day, it’s all about the kids with activities, live performances, face painting and, of course a huge array of street food. Saturday night at the bandstand sees the funk-tastic Craig Charles spinning the disco discs as Melting Pot gets us to groove the night away.  This is an event that has something for everyone.

And, if after you’ve busted some moves you are still after a little boogie, head along to SWG3 for ABBA Disco Wonderland. This is, and I quote ‘The biggest Abba Club night IN THE WORLD’!  Get the comfy shoes on though as it’s an all-nighter.  The Galvanizers Yard will become a 70s ballroom to get you in the mood for some Saturday Night Fever moves.  You CAN dance, you CAN jive…

Top For Spooky Goings On

There simply cannot be an Autumn Top Things without mentioning Halloween.  And it seems every genre of entertainment wants in on it.  The RSNO are playing in The Haunted Concert Hall to ward off the ghosts and ghouls before All Hallows Eve.  This Children’s Classic Concert is set to be a spine-tingler…or was that just the percussion section on the triangle?

At The Stand Comedy Club, they are hosting a Big Halloween Kids Show.  A family friendly show with games, stand-up, competitions and a lot of laughs.  Expect the unexpected…well it is Halloween.

And finally, what could be better for Halloween than The Rocky Horror Show?  How about The Rocky Horror Show starring Jason Donovan?  The Pavilion have pulled out all the stops and invited Brad, Janet and Dr Frank’n’Furter over just in time for Halloween.  And if you don’t know the moves to Time Warp, it’s okay, you get instructions.
