Looking for the best Chinese restaurants in Glasgow? Look no further…
by Amy Glasgow
We’re extremely lucky in Glasgow that in the west end alone, there are so many incredible eateries to choose from. So much so that actually choosing where to dine can be quite overwhelming. Which ones are good? Which ones will let you down? I’m here to help!
Each month, I’ll bring you my top five spots for a specific category or type of cuisine. Today we’re talking Chinese food. The west end alone has tonnes of Chinese-inspired restaurants, but which ones offer a true taste of China? We’re here to help…
Dumpling Monkey, Dumbarton Rd
For me, this is my go-to when I’m looking for a satisfying and authentic Chinese meal. The menu, while large, is full of not just the standard, more westernised dishes, but a whole host of more authentic dishes. My must orders whenever I go to Dumpling Monkey are the General Tso’s Chicken – great if you like a good amount of spice – and the Beef Ho Fun. Ho fun is a type of wide, flat rice noodle, and is simply flavoured with soy sauce, oyster sauce, spring onions and a little sesame oil. Order it instead of your regular chow mein next time and you will not regret it.
Noodles and Dumplings, Gibson St
Located on Gibson Street, this restaurant has recently gained a name for itself on social media as one of the best places to get authentic dim sum and hot pots. The noodles are made daily in house, and if you peek into the kitchen, you might just see them being made throughout the day. The menu is very traditional, so it is a great option if you are looking for a true taste of China. I recommend getting the soup dumplings – one of my all-time favourite dim sum dishes! A meaty steamed dumpling filled with soup. Heaven!
KaKa Lok, St George’s Cross
Do not let the simple décor of this place fool you. What Kaka Lok lacks in its layout and design, it more than makes up for with its food. The menu is filled with everything you could possibly want, from salt and chilli squid to all your favourite takeaway classics. If you are sitting in though, I suggest you order one of their roasts. The three roast is the winner, with Cantonese style roast duck, crispy pork belly and char siu pork.
GooDuck, Byres Rd
A relatively new addition to the west end, GooDuck specialises in, as you can probably guess, duck. While they offer a large selection of other dishes, like sweet & sour, curry, black bean sauce and so on, their roasts are what they specialise in. Like KaKa Lok, they offer the classic Three Roast of Cantonese duck, crispy roast pork and char siu. Or if you are more of a chicken fan, you can treat yourself to their whole soya roast chicken, or crispy roast chicken leg.
Ho’s Chinese, Knightswood
I am cheating a little bit here with this one, as it is take-away only, but it deserves a mention as it is, in my humble opinion, the best Chinese takeaway in Glasgow. Despite being hidden away in Knightswood, this little takeaway is ALWAYS busy, so if you want to get an order, you will need to be quick as slots fill up fast. Proof of just how good it is. Some of their best dishes are their Malaysian satay, their Special chow mein, and of course, their famous PITA (pain in the ass) rolls – spring rolls filled with chicken curry fried rice. They are INCREDIBLE.
