A Student’s View of the West End

It’s finally summer. And that means one thing, we’re free! It’s time to celebrate the end of the semester with some cheap spots to meet your friends over the break.

Lunch Spots

One of my favourite spots in the West End is Naked Soup, which has gained a cult following for its freshly made sandwiches, stunning focaccia, and stuffed bagels. I highly recommend the chicken aioli bagel with some of their roast tomato, ricotta and orzo soup to go with it! In the evening, Naked Soup transforms into a cosy bar with moody lighting to match. It all feels very European – making it the perfect place to romanticise your Wednesday night. Around the corner you’ll find Hillhead Book Club, filled with students any night of the week. With a 20% student discount and affordable prices, you can easily grab a seat with a group of friends for a lunch under a tenner. And if you’re looking for a boozy brunch, cocktails are just £5.96 from Monday to Thursday. So, you can kick back in the beer garden and bask in the sun. That might be a little ambitious for a Glasgow summer…

Steak Date Night

Date night coming up before pay day? Fear not. Head to the The Loveable Rouge on a Tuesday night for a fantastic deal: steak and fries with peppercorn sauce or mussels in a white wine sauce with fries for just £10. After hearing all the hype, I had to try it for myself, and I was not disappointed. Accommodating and friendly staff, great food for an even better price, what’s not to love? If you’re looking for a meal for two in Finneston, check out Big Slope. Two steaks and a bottle of wine for £25, all served beside the ambient glow of their wood fireplace. But that’s not all. To top it all off they have £5.50 margaritas. How can you refuse?

Group Dining

No student guide would be complete without the West End staple, and much-loved, Paesano. If you haven’t visited yet, where have you been? Known for the quickest service this side of the Clyde, Paesano is affordable and delicious. It’s the perfect spot for larger groups looking for a casual and cool dining experience. If the sun makes a surprise appearance, join the ‘To Go – Q’ and take your pizza boxes to the Botanic Gardens. Good vibes guaranteed. If you’re more in the mood for a burger, walk up the street to Bread Meats Bread and take advantage of their 50% student discount every Monday. With an extensive menu, plant-based options, and a variety of sides, it ensures that everyone in your group will leave happy.
