Candlelit flickers, a musical masterpiece fills the church, whilst scents of cinnamon mulled wine fill the air. It’s Christmas with the Glasgow Barons…
Christmas Classical Concert in Glasgow
What is your perfect image of Christmas? Kids on sledges in Kelvingrove, bustling shoppers on Buchanan Street or family around the table as the turkey is carved? What about a beautiful, candlelit church, filled with a glorious classical music and the angelic voices of a children’s choir? We have a winner.
Making that picturesque Christmas dream a reality are the magnificent Glasgow Barons. Based in Govan the Barons have been an integral part of the community since 2017. With a real understanding of the social and economic issues the community still faces, the Glasgow Barons have made music the key to combatting these hardships. The team work with local schools, community groups and charities to bring music to Govan. Music programmes, charitable concerts, supporting local singer-songwriters, the Glasgow Barons have put their music where their mouth is!
The Performance
In celebration of the festive season the Barons bring you their performance of Bach’s Magnificat, ‘a festive masterpiece for choir, soloists and orchestra.’ Bach composed this special Christmas piece for Christmas 1723. Very much an uplifting, joyous composition, the Magnificat sees orchestra and choral movements performed in one stunning musical piece. Afterwards, they invite you to join in singing traditional Christmas carols with them, or just sit back and enjoy these beautiful standards.
The Glasgow Barons Christmas celebration takes place in the beautiful setting of Govan’s Linthouse Parish Church. The Govan Cross church serves the community as a place of worship but the sanctuary is also utilised by the community by local organisations. This December, the church will be transformed, as the spirit of Christmas descends and its interior becomes a candlelit wonderland. Joining the Barons as special guests are Govan Gaelic Primary School choir. And with mulled wine and Christmas carols all adding to that festive spirit, your picture perfect Christmas is complete!
Christmas at its heart is about coming together as a community. And with the opening of the Govan Bridge, joining ours, who needs a donkey? Our Christmas journey to Linthouse Parish Church is but a star-filled walk across the Clyde.
