Mid-Summer has been and gone, but there is still a wealth of events ahead as we Westenders embark on the latter stages of Summer.

Bard in the Botanics – well of course that was going to be top of top things! The annual thespian-fest kicks off at the end of June, running all the way through July till August. The theme this year – Magic-Mayhem-and Murder! Will some absolute showstopping plays, this is a humdinger of a year. The first two out of the stalls are, ahh, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Christopher Marlowe’s Doctor Faustus. Bill’s enchanting comedy of faeries and romance needs no introduction, but what about Doctor Faustus? Marlowe’s Elizabethan tragedy tells the story of the academic Doctor who sells his soul to the devil. Can the demon Mephistopheles’s tales of hell lead the ‘good’ Doctor back on the road to redemption?

The later plays in the series are, again ahh, Romeo and Juliet and Director Jennifer Dick’s adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyle’s short story, A Scandal in Bohemia. Once again, the Bard’s ultimate ill-fated lovers need no introduction, so let’s consider Mr Holmes’s mysterious tale. A Scandal in Bohemia was the first short story to feature Holmes and tells the tale of a nobleman murdered. Has Sherlock Holmes met his intellectual equal in the quick-witted Miss Adler? Oh, I do love a Holmes mystery!

Top for all things Dog

Barklove is Glasgow’s newest dog friendly festival. The entire SWG3 campus will be awash with wagging tales as excited pups and their humans take in the day.
There are a host of activities for your pooches – including pampering sessions, behaviour and education seminars and grooming tips. With a fantastic doggy market to browse, pick up some healthy doggy treats, canine couture and doggy spa products. Then time for a boogie and some chow (food not dog breed) as you and your hairy baby bust some Crufts-worthy moves to the onsite DJs. Truly family friendly day – all of the family.

I’m a bit of a Bond nerd, so I couldn’t be more excited by the arrival of Q The Music’s James Bond Spectacular. Universally lauded as the world’s finest performers of the Bond soundtracks, the orchestra also pay homage to famous incidental music from the series. These iconic tunes are the soundtracks to our lives and will fill The Pavilion Theatre this July.
Along at Cottiers Theatre in Hyndland When We Were Young, is a play that again takes us back – this time to the 1990s. Remember when street corners were populated by GYTs – Glasgow Young Teams (delete the G and add your own town.) Gang culture was allegedly at its worst then and this tale of stolen youth lets us view the lives of these young people. Emotional, heartbreaking, yet very funny, When We Were Young is recommended for audiences over 16.

Top for Summer Camps

The Movement Park in Whiteinch opened its doors in 2017 and since then has gone from strength to strength. The charity is based in a converted warehouse, providing indoor and outdoor activity space for children. It’s known as the ‘go-to’ centre for all things Parkour, BMX and Skateboarding – to name but a few activities. With classes for kids from pre-school to S1, it’s a place for children to learn about the many facets of movement in a safe, supervised and educated way.
This July, as well as plenty of Summer Camps, the Movement Park are running a Family Active Play Afternoon at the Glasgow BMX Centre to raise awareness of and develop physical literacy. With different stations set up outside for the kids to try out, it’s just a snip at £3 per child. Try balancing, jumping, throwing, ninja course, skate tricks etc. And if the wee ones have enjoyed it, then the Movement Park may become a regular venue for the family.
