SEPTEMBER
G Flip
Sunday 8th September 7pm
Galvanizers, SWG3
Georgia Claire Flipo, known professionally as G Flip, is an Australian singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer from Melbourne, Australia. They are primarily a drummer and a singer, but can deftly handle a Flying V too. The video for her latest single is a one take shot of her playing drums and singing on a flat bed trailer being towed along a dirt track. It’s not the smoothest of rides and I keep wondering how many times they took a chunk out of their tongue during filming. It’s a fun watch tho.
Their second album ‘Drummer’ won Australian Album of the Year at the prestigious J Awards in 2023 and has the brilliant and said single ‘The Worse Person Alive’ on it. G Flip is a force.
Choice Track: G Flip – ‘The Worse Person Alive’
The Brother Brothers
Sunday 8th September 7.30pm
The Hug And Pint
The Brother Brothers are Adam and David Moss, identical twins born and raised in Peoria, Illinois, USA.
I know the Simon & Garfunkel comparisons will be easy to make when listening to them, but there’s a wee bit of McCartney in there too that delicately pulls it away from the 60’s folk icons’ sound. But this really is the era where this music should be … it’s beautifully recorded and performed with precision and poise. Both brothers can really play and make it sound all so effortless. They are out on a European tour till mid September promoting their second album ‘The January Album’.
Choice Track: The Brother Brothers – ‘Red And Gold’
Seagrows
Monday 9th September 7pm
Òran Mor
Searows is the indie-folk project of 20 something Alec Duckart (he/him), a Kentucky-born, singer-songwriter and guitarist. His debut album, Guard Dog (released 2022), was written, recorded, and produced by Alec alone, on a glitchy old laptop. This style of music is categorised as ’Sad Indie’, but it’s so, so beautiful and uplifting, it doesn’t make me feel sad at all. Alec describes himself as an incredibly anxious person and anxiety is a major theme in what he does. I just hope he doesn’t have to go through too much pain to create such delightful music.
Choice Track: Seagrows – ‘House Song’
OCTOBER
Becky Hill
Saturday 12th October 6:30pm
OVO Hydro
If u’d asked me to name the singer on all these iconic dance anthems’ titles staring back at me from Becky Hill’s Spotify page I wouldn’t have been able to. Until now that is (I’ll await my moment in the music round of my local’s pub quiz). But English born Becky Hill has really owned this space for the last 10 years … Since she won The Voice TV Competition Show in 2014 she has worked with superstar DJ/Producers David Guetta, Rudimental & Chase & Status. She’s also a multiple Brit Award winner in 2022 & 2023. I guess if you prompted your A.I. music creating software of choice to make you a ’20’s dance anthem then this is the voice it would generate. It’s as though her voice was just made for this style of music. Freakishly symbiotic.
Choice Track – Becky Hill (with David Guetta) – ‘Remember’
Norman Blake
Wednesday 16th October 7:30pm
Cottiers Theatre
No not the side kick guitarist to Johnny Cash for over 30 years (incidentally, he’s still out touring at 86 years old!), but it’s the considerably younger Norman Blake, the lead singer of Scottish indie treasures “Teenage Fanclub” who is playing solo tonite at the old Quakers church in Hyndland. There’s not much info out there about Blake’s solo shows other than that he’ll be drawing from the extensive back catalogue of Teenage Fanclub for the set he’ll play. Those of you who are familiar with ‘The Fannies’ sound might be wondering how a solo performance will work without all those backing vocal harmonies that are so prominent on their records … I think a night of audience participation might be in store to help out Blake and should make for a memorable occasion.
Choice Track: Teenage Fanclub – ‘Verisimilitude’
Leif Vollebekk
Thursday 17th October 7:30pm
Queen Margaret Union (QMU)
This style of music is ubiquitous … Ray LaMontagne, David Gray, Ruben Hein (my personal fav), Damien Rice etc … but it’s not easy to get it right. Leif Vollebekk has managed to find his own way of doing it that works very well … I hear some Bruce Hornsby and even Springsteen in here too … When he sits at his piano he has the look of a young Freddy Mercury but with the motions of a flailing Tom York. I found myself letting a few of his tracks play out till the end … there’s even drifting guitar solos along many of the outros too, dare I say à la Dire Straits … Yes, there’s a lot going on in Leif’s music, but it’s the earnest vocals that drive it all along and keeps you focused on the songs. Recommended.
Choice Track: Leif Vollebekk – ‘Southern Star’
