Westender Magazine @ Cuku
By Amy Glasgow

I think we can all agree that these early months of a new year can feel, well, somewhat depressing, am I right? It’s cold, it’s dark, the festive period feels like a distant dream, and you are trying to spend less. So, what if you still want to be able to enjoy a meal out somewhere warm and friendly that also won’t break the bank? Enter Cuku.
This cosy little shop, deli and cafe, located on the corner of Kirklee Road, is the perfect spot to escape to when you need a break from your kitchen (those healthy eating resolutions are starting to get really boring now, aren’t they?).
Make a Date for Thursday
On Thursday evenings from 5pm, it is Pizza & Pasta night at Cuku. A unique menu of Chef Alfon’s weekly specials is offered up, with most dishes costing just £12. On this particular dreary Thursday, the call of the Calzone was one I was more than happy to answer. Filled with chistorra (a Spanish chorizo-style sausage), caramelised onions, pepperoni, spicy salsa and of course, cheese, it was a perfectly rich and filling dinner ideal for these cold nights. At just £12 and a hefty portion size, it felt like an absolute bargain. Of course, if calzones are not your thing, there are good old fashioned unfolded pizzas on offer too.

On the pasta front, the options were all about comfort, and definitely not the kind of dishes you would find on a classic Italian menu. My dining partner opted for the super indulgent baked BBQ pulled pork and mozzarella casarecce – think mac and cheese meets a Texas BBQ. This gooey bake was packed full of deliciously tender pulled pork, and while very tasty, it could have used just a touch of freshness – maybe a handful of cherry tomatoes on the side? – just to break up the heaviness of the meat and cheese. Regardless, the entire dish was devoured in a pretty short window.

The Price is Right
This pasta bake also came in at just £12, so dinner for two for just £24 is an absolute steal when money is tight. If, for some bizarre reason, pizza and pasta is not your thing, every other day of the week Cuku serves up a varied breakfast, brunch and evening menu at pretty reasonable prices. Plus, the deli and larder means you can stock up on some lovely wines, produce and more at the same time. What’s not to love?
