Two years in the building, the new Govan-Partick Bridge is openings and it’s time to celebrate!

It’s been a wee while coming, but the new Govan Footbridge will finally open, uniting Govan to Partick. And to mark the occasion, a one day festival takes place on Saturday 7th September 2024.
Brought to you by the team behind the Govan Music Festival and Govan’s own regeneration orchestra The Glasgow Barons, the festival is unticketed and completely free. The day kicks off at 10 am with performances at Govan Cross and at the footbridge ‘plaza’ area. The day will be a mix of local performers and well known Scottish musicians and promises a mix of musical genres.
The Line-Up

On the line up, the glorious voice of Horse McDonald will lilt across the River Clyde. Ready for a wee jig? Then ladies, contain yourselves as The Red Hot Chilli Pipers will be on hand to provide the music. For more a more contemporary mood Glasgow’s own Colonel Mustard and the Dijon Five will be performing as well as a host of local rappers, including CCTV.
From the local community, school choirs will be celebrating this great occasion and entertaining the crowds. The day will also see Govan Allsorts Community Choir gracing us with their harmonies.
The fabulous radio station ‘Sunny G FM’ will have their DJs on hand to keep the tunes coming too. It’s fitting that Govan’s own Community Pipe Band will take to the plaza stage, for what could be more appropriate than the sound of bagpipes over The Clyde?
Get to Know Govan
And it doesn’t end there. As well as the musical side of the festival, it’s a chance for local charities and community organisations to get involved in the day. It’s an opportunity for those visiting the festival to get a feel for the cultural heritage of Govan, to explore local heritage sites such as The Govan Stones and Fairfield Heritage Museum.

The ends of the footbridge will connect Govan’s Water Row directly to The Transport Museum. But as it is a swing bridge, it has the capacity to open for vessels, including the beautiful Waverley paddle steamer, on its Summer cruises ‘doon the watter.’
Paul MacAlindin, organiser of the Govan Footbridge Festival, said: ‘The opening of the new Govan-Partick Bridge is a fantastic opportunity for the communities on either side of the Clyde to come together. Historically, you could wade across the Clyde at low tide, before the ship building industry widened and deepened the river. Now, folk from both sides can explore each other’s neighbourhoods once more.’

The Govan Footbridge Festival takes place on Saturday 7th September at Govan Cross and Govan Footbridge Plaza from 10 am – 8pm.
