INSIDE STORY

by Lisa Trainer, Red Door Interiors

‘An interior designer creates beautifully curated spaces considering the layout of an area to optimise functionality whilst placing furniture and fixtures to create a harmonious balance between aesthetics and practicality.’

Put simply, interior design has the power to transform any space into a work of art, comfortable home, functional workplace, stylish restaurant or in fact any beautiful space, all showing variations of interior design at work – an essential part of our everyday lives affecting how we live, work, rest and play! So, how does the process of Interior design actually work? (It is so much more than just choosing cushions and paint colours….).

Compatability is Key

Finding a compatible interior designer to fulfil any design scheme, big or small, residential or commercial, design team or solo will not only help channel your own creative potential and ideas but will, believe it or not, save you time and money.

Aligning aesthetic visions and offering a professional service to personally coordinate all the component parts of any brief, a designer will advise, design, create, space plan, source and problem solve. When choosing a suitable designer consider friends, local networks, neighbours and co workers – word of mouth is surely the best recommendation and reputation to have.

The interior design journey begins with an initial consultation to discuss all aspects of the work involved. A talented designer listens to their client through detailed conversations to carefully understand their vision, lifestyle, preferences and budget and should offer an indication of confident ideas and solutions. It is essential at this stage that both parties have a connection and quite simply this is based on personality, and from my own personal experience gut instinct. A good working relationship is paramount and mutual trust and respect is essential.

Concept

With a clear understanding, the interior designer begins developing a concept for the space. They craft a design proposal that includes mood boards, colour palettes, material samples and inspirational images. This concept becomes the foundation upon which the entire design will be built, and this may stretch the imagination of the client to suggest elements which take them out of their own comfort zone and potential and into the mind of the designer. A design fee will be presented at this stage and will be charged. There may be additional fees for project management and procurement of products, all of which will be detailed clearly.

Once the concept, fee and budget are approved, the designer then develops the design of the space in finer detail, guiding the client through the selection of all materials and finishes. They carefully analyse all areas considering dimensions, architectural elements, and specific needs to optimise functionality, flow and visual appeal.

For me, lighting and colour should be considered from the start and becomes a strategic part of any spatial design. Furniture, finishes, fabrics, task or mood lighting and accessories that coordinate with the overall concept are meticulously considered, including flooring, wall coverings and any custom designed fixtures, all elements to bring the design to life.

The Little Black Book

This stage involves striking a balance between aesthetics, practicality, and personal style. Visual aids such as 3D renderings or sketches may be used to help and a designer’s expertise in material quality, durability, safety and aesthetic considerations means that there is peace of mind in the finish.

They will also handle the procurement process, sourcing and ordering the necessary items for the project which saves many hours. An interior designer’s sourcebook and network of suppliers is highly coveted for a reason!

So many products are available now online at the touch of a button, but the value is in the time, years of experience, expertise, creativity and keeping up to date with new product launches and trends to come up with the ideas in the first place. If any construction or remodelling work is required, the interior designer collaborates with contractors, architects, tradespeople and specialist makers.

They oversee the construction process, ensuring the design is executed to perfection. Patience and planning help to alleviate stress and frustration for the client and regular site visits, understanding, communication with the trusted team and attention to detail are paramount. As the project nears completion, the interior designer focuses on styling and adding the finishing touches. They curate accessories, artwork, and decor items enhancing the overall design aesthetic. Window treatments, lighting fixtures, textiles (cushions for example!) and other details are carefully selected to create a cohesive space.

This is the exciting part – the moment when your new space in revealed. The journey of interior design is an exhilarating process that combines creative vision, functional expertise and collaborative efforts. From the initial consultation and concept through to completion, working with a skilled interior designer means access to their artistic insights, attention to design detail and comprehensive industry knowledge.
