Westender Magazine @ Casa

By Amy Glasgow @theglasgowdiet

Despite only opening its doors at the beginning of April, Casa quickly made a name for itself as the new go-to brunch and dinner spot in the west end. Located on Great Western Road in the previous home of BRGR, this Latin American inspired restaurant offers a ranch of brunch dishes by day, and small sharing plates by night.

The restaurant itself is small with limited covers, with an interior that feels cool and relaxed, making you feel transported from the hustle and bustle of Great Western Road. During the day, you can enjoy their breakfast and brunch menu, which offers Latin American twists on classic brunch dishes, as well as trendy, healthier dishes like Acia Bowls and Breakfast Burritos.

Breakfast and Brunch

For those with a hefty appetite in the morning, you can enjoy the Casa Breakfast, with Brazilian sausage, streaky maple bacon, house hash brown, refried beans, eggs your way, mushroom, tomato and chilli relish. If you fancy something lighter, I’d recommend the Ricotta and Fig Toast, or the Avocado and Eggs.

My top hitters on the brunch menu though are their take on two brunch classics: Eggs Benny and French Toast (not on the same plate though… obviously). Rather than the standard sourdough or English muffins, Casa’s Eggs Benny is served on their house hash brown and finished with chipotle oil. This adds a hint of smoky, chilli heat and the hash brown is both soft and crispy, easily replacing its bready brother.

The French Toast, or Rabanadas, is a Brazilian French toast that comes heavily doused in cinnamon sugar and served with a berry compote. This toast is crispy on the outside, while on the inside is deliciously soft and custardy. A must-order for sweet tooths!

Sensational Small Plates

When it hits 5pm, the eggs and bacon go away and the small plates menus come out to play, along with a fine wine and cocktail list. Designed to share, plates are divided into Earth, Land and Sea. Land options include sirloin steak with chimichurri, or Masa Fried Chicken Tacos, which come with a zingy and delicious habanero mayo and pico de gallo, although the chicken was a tad on the dry side.

For me, it’s the Sea section is where Casa shines. The Blackened Cod with miso, saki, mirin and soy was perfectly cooked and filled with the salty, umami goodness of soy and miso. Similarly, the Grilled Langoustines with garlic and chilli butter were perfectly sweet and succulent.

To finish the meal, we sampled the Pistachio Meringue with fresh figs, pomegranate gel and blackberry cream. Despite its tantalising description, I felt this dish left a little to be desired flavour-wise – I think next time I’d opt for the Dark Chocolate Mousse.

All in, Casa is a great addition to the west end, although in my personal opinion, I think their brunch menu is where this place really shines. I’m still thinking about that cinnamon coated French toast days later…
