Welcome, Freshers! You’re about to start some of the best years of your life, and there’s no better place to spend them than in Glasgow’s West End. To help you make the most of this new adventure, here are some top tips to get you started:

Find your routine

University comes with newfound freedom, and managing your time can be tricky. Sure, no one wants to roll out of bed for that 9am lecture, but getting into good habits early will make life so much easier when exam season hits. The key is to make your routine enjoyable! Treat yourself to an iced matcha after lectures on a Monday, keep Thursdays free for trying a new hobby, and save Saturday nights for going out with friends. Remember that while studying is important, so is meeting new people and growing as a person. That’s what university is for! Be sure to make time for social events, hanging out with friends, and a little downtime too.

Take every opportunity

The West End is your oyster. Make the most of what’s available to you! Whether it’s joining a society, trying out a new sport, or volunteering at your student union, get involved. It’s a great way to meet like-minded people from outside your course. Societies are always eager to have new members and will be some of the most welcoming people you’ve met! My top advice? Be curious. Stepping outside your comfort zone is a sure way to meet new people, boost your confidence, and make those unforgettable uni memories.

Be a tourist

Even if you’re from Glasgow, there’s always more to discover in the West End. Bring a sense of adventure to your everyday and act like a tourist. Start with a walk around the Botanic Gardens, they’re especially gorgeous this time of year. Then check out the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum – it’s packed with interesting exhibits and best of all, it’s free! Something as small as trying a new café now and then will help the West End feel like home. To keep exploring, download the Westender app for a guide right in your pocket!

Make use of your student discount

I’m sure you won’t need reminding… but just in case: remember to use your student discount! You’d be surprised how quickly the pennies add up. Apps like UNiDAYS and Student Beans are your new best friend. Not just in stores, but a lot of online shops also offer deals targeted at students. Always check before you buy because student discounts can be a lifesaver!

Enjoy the nightlife

You’re in luck – Glasgow is renowned for its nightlife, and it doesn’t get much better than the West End. Whatever your scene, there’s a spot for everyone. If you’re after a cool vibe with moody lighting, cocktails, and a bite to eat, West Side Tavern is worth a visit. Looking for live music? Wunderbar is a student staple, and they’ve recently opened a second venue near Kelvinhall subway station. Honestly, I could go on for days about all the great venues that you should check out, but I’ll save that for the next edition…

Be kind!

Starting university can be overwhelming, so don’t forget to be kind to yourself and those around you. If things get tough, take time for self-care: whether it’s a mindful walk in the park, seeing a film at the cinema, or calling your family. It’s okay to need help, so don’t hesitate to reach out to a friend, your university’s support services, or a student-led organisation like Nightline for confidential support. There’s no shame in asking for a helping hand when you need it.

This is just the beginning of an amazing journey. Keep an eye out for more tips and tricks in the student column of the Westender. You’ve got this! Enjoy every moment and make the most of everything that the West End has to offer.
