The Tall Ship Award

The Tall Ship Glenlee. As much of a landmark of Glasgow as Wellington’s statue in Royal Exchange Square.

The Glenlee sits proudly overlooking the Riverside Museum, having been docked on the Clyde since 1993. The ship has sailed under British, Italian and Spanish flags over its 128 years old. It no longer carries cargo, instead is an incredible museum, recreating the interior of what the ship would have looked like during it’s voyages.

Built in 1896 on the Clyde, it is one of only five of its kind still afload globally. It welcomes over 100,000 visitors a year.

If you have ever visited The Tall Ship, you’ll know it really is a fantastic experience. The Captain’s quarters, the first mate’s cabin, the galley, all recreate life on the ocean waves. With interactive features, role play and a cafe with delicious treats, it’s a great day out for young and old.

Congratulations!

Such is the standard of the experience, that the staff of the trust who oversee The Glenlee have recently won a regional tourism award. The Scottish Thistle Awards, organised by Visit Scotland, celebrate the very best of the tourism and events industry in Scotland. The Tall Ship won Best Visitor Attraction in the West of Scotland. The category looks at ‘variety of opportunities provided to Scotland’s visitors.’ Plus it looks at the attractions which provide ‘world-class service with authentic, memorable experiences.’ Without doubt, The Glenlee ticked all of the boxes and the team went forward to the finals this month, but were unlucky to lose out to The Highland Wildlife Park in Kingussie.

Top Scottish Tourist Attraction

Lauren Macrae, Visitor Experience Manager at The Tall Ship Glenlee, says: “We are incredibly honoured to win the Scottish Thistle Award for Best Visitor Attraction in the West of Scotland. This recognition is a testament to our entire team and the community that supports The Tall Ship Glenlee. We are proud to celebrate Scotland’s maritime heritage and will continue creating unforgettable experiences for all who step aboard.”

Fiona Greer, Development Director at The Tall Ship Glenlee, said:

“We are delighted to receive this recognition, which reflects the hard work of our team and the continued support of our partners, funders and the wider tourism sector. The Tall Ship Glenlee is an important part of Scotland’s heritage, and this award strengthens our commitment to ensuring the ship remains a leading visitor attraction and a valued contributor to the region’s rich cultural and tourism landscape.”

So although narrowly missing out in the finals, we wish all at The Tall Ship the best of luck in the future. You are always winners in our books!
