A Perfect Day in Hyndland

In Glasgow’s West End, we are spoiled for choice when it comes to pockets of charm. From Byres Road to Great Western Road, every area has its own personality. But for this issue of Westender, we shine a light on one particular street that feels like a mini staycation all on its own – Hyndland Road.

By Anne Marie Hillan

If I were away for the weekend and found myself staying near Hyndland Road,  I’d honestly be thrilled. It’s that kind of street – beautiful, walkable, and filled with unique, independent gems that make a day here feel like something special. So I decided to spend a day in Hyndland as if I were a weekend tourist and I’m inviting you to come along with me. Trust me, this is one West End wander you will want to try for yourself.

Start With Brunch

I like to begin my Hyndland day at the Great Western Road end – I have options here that are just right for easing into a leisurely day. My first stop is often Caffè Parma, a local favourite and an ideal place to plan the rest of your day over a good breakfast.

Their Eggs Hebridean – think poached eggs with black pudding on sourdough, with hollandaise on the side – is my absolute go-to. Pair it with an Americano and you’re off to a flying start.

If I’m in the mood for something lighter (or just passing by a little later in the day), I might wander just a block down to Novar Drive. This coffee shop, open now for a year, is already a Hyndland institution and a hidden gem. They serve up a range of excellent coffee and divine pastries, and on a sunny day, both Caffè Parma and Novar Drive have lovely ‘sitooteries’ that give off serious continental café vibes. With brunch done and caffeine in hand, it’s time to stroll down Hyndland Road and begin an absolutely fabulous West End shopping adventure.

Vinyl, Fashion and Interiors
Second Line Records

Heading down past Clarence Drive, my first must-visit is the fantastic Second Line Records. Specialising in jazz vinyl, this shop is a joy to browse. This new store is beautiful, and their vinyl collection is outstanding. From jazz legends like Miles Davis to local artists featured in the Glasgow Jazz Festival – with a bit of hip hop and soul too – this store blends global icons with homegrown talent. The staff are brilliantly knowledgeable and clearly passionate about the music. They even have vinyl players and accessories if you’re looking to level up your listening setup.

Almost next door is Biscuit Clothing & Interiors, a beautifully curated shop offering women’s fashion, footwear and a dreamy selection of interiors.

From dresses and tops to candleholders and lifestyle books, it’s the sort of place you could walk into for a ‘quick look’ and walk out with bags!

Fresh Flowers and Fashion Staples

Just a few doors down, Rose & Thyme is another must. This florist recently underwent a stunning refurbishment and the shop now looks as fresh as its flowers. With a wonderful selection of plants, floral arrangements, planters and garden accessories, it is nearly impossible to walk past without treating yourself. I am convinced that fresh flowers can elevate any room and Rose & Thyme never disappoints.

Corke and Caske

By this point, depending on how you’re pacing yourself, you might be reaching that ‘It’s five o’clock somewhere’ stage – or at least be tempted. In which case, stop in at Corke & Caske, a superb independent wine and spirits shop. They stock a hand-picked range of fine wines, spirits and cocktails, plus gourmet deli goods, artisan crisps and amazing bread-dipping oils. If you’re in the West End for longer, watch out for their tasting sessions. So far, I’ve tried whisky and champagne in here and I would definitely recommend it. On a warm day, you can sit outside with a glass of something chilled and watch the West End go by. Bliss.

If you’re not ready for wine yet, or simply want to keep shopping, keep heading along the street. There’s beautiful artwork on display at The Mansfield Gallery, plus a few excellent hairdressers and barbers if you’re in the mood for a mini makeover.

My next stop would be Brenda Muir.  This women’s boutique has been a Hyndland staple for 35 years and under the direction of the lovely Marisa Davis for the past decade, it has gone from strength to strength. Marisa herself often models the store’s pieces on Instagram, showing how to style their unique blend of classic fashion with a twist. They stock clothes and shoes for every occasion – and also for everyday stylish wear. Dresses that can be worn as a shirt or a dress… to a wedding or on holiday. Really versatile, classic clothing! Marisa has even promised to give me a proper styling session one day – and I am definitely going to take her up on it.

Gifts and Homeware Heaven

At this point, I might well have my hands full – some beautiful Biscuit homeware, a potential new outfit from Brenda Muir, a record or two and definitely some fresh flowers. But there’s always room for one more stop, especially when it’s Cassiopeia.

Cassiopeia

This is hands-down one of the most delightful gift shops in Glasgow. It’s hard to describe everything Cassiopeia offers. It’s one of those treasure troves where you find something new every time you go in. From jewellery and candles to locally made cushions, art prints and even picnic baskets (this summer’s seasonal section is particularly adorable). There are vases and lamps, women’s clothing, glassware, ceramics – even a gent’s section. It’s the perfect place to find gifts – for others or for yourself – and they have fabulous cards and wrapping paper too. I never go by without popping in.

It is under fabulous new ownership with Sarah and her daughter Lois, but the familiar faces of the original team are still there. Stop by – you’ll get a warm welcome and a pleasant surprise when you see the great selection of homeware, jewellery and gifts available.

Along the street again is Good Story, a clothing store for both men and women that offers a different vibe from Biscuit or Brenda Muir. That’s the beauty of Hyndland – the variety is incredible and there truly is something for every style and taste. If you have time you might pop into Ellen Conlin Hair and Beauty for a hairdo or a treatment. They have such a friendly team in there. You will be well looked after!

If you’re in the market for larger homeware pieces, just cross the road to Basus. Their range includes stylish dining tables, chairs, sofas and striking pendant lights that would be showstoppers in any home. Upstairs, you’ll find even more furniture, prints and accessories – perfect if you’re redecorating or just looking to add something special to your space.

Dinner and Drinks – the Perfect End to the Day

By this point in the day, I’m usually ready to pause and take it all in – and there’s no better place than one of Hyndland Road’s fantastic restaurants or bars.

Epicures is a long-standing favourite that’s recently had a glow-up under new ownership. The refreshed menu, new bar area and welcoming vibe make it a perfect place to relax and unwind after a day of shopping. It’s open late every day, so it’s great for both early and late diners. And it has a beautiful, shady alfresco terrace and outside seating area – no matter the Glasgow weather.

Just across the road is The Clarence, which offers a classic menu, a separate bar area, and excellent two-course deals, drink specials and a Monday evening quiz. Both venues are ideal for winding down, catching up with friends or enjoying a solo glass of wine while you plan your next move. I can vouch for this, having tried out both.

Epicures
More Than Just Shops

What makes Hyndland Road truly special isn’t just the shops. It’s the local community and the atmosphere that comes with it. It’s a beautiful street full of gorgeous sandstone tenements where every business has its own story. Many of them are locally owned and every pound you spend here supports a real person and a real family, so much so that if you’re a frequent shopper, you’ll get to know all about them!

In one stretch of road, you’ll find homewares, gifts, clothing, art, hair and beauty salons, florists, barbers, a nail bar, bookshop, a top butcher and more. Whether you want to window shop, treat yourself, or tick off your gift list, you can do it all here – and feel good about supporting local independent businesses while you’re at it.

So, whether you’re a West End local, coming from another part of Glasgow or visiting the city, do yourself a favour and spend some time in Hyndland. Walk the street, chat to the shop owners, discover a new favourite boutique and soak up the charm of one of the city’s most stylish, welcoming and inspiring shopping destinations. Maybe I’ll see you there.
