Five Of The Best… Sunday Roasts

Words/Images by Amy Glasgow

We can all feel it. Summer is already beginning to feel like a distant memory, heatwaves are a thing of the past and the colder, darker months are looming. With autumn comes the craving for cosy Sunday afternoons in a pub, with a hearty Sunday roast and a bottle of red. So, where are the best spots in the west end for a good old roast? Here are our top picks…

THE CLARENCE

If you’ve been to this Hyndland spot before, you’ll know they take classic dishes and elevate them, and they do so very well, so it’s no surprise that their Sunday roast is a winner. Though the snacks, starters and sides change regularly, the heart of the Sunday menu tends to remain the same, with two courses for £30 or three for £37. Roasts include a choice of Roasted Chateaubriand of Aberdeen Angus Beef bone marrow gravy, or the slightly more unusual Roast Monkfish Tail with a chive beurre blanc. All roasts are served with roasties, glazed carrots, spring veg, cauliflower cheese and Yorkshire pudding.

THE LOVEABLE ROGUE

A firm favourite and known for its generous Sunday roasts, The Loveable Rogue’s roast has taken Glasgow by storm since day one. Offering two courses for £35 or three for £39, the roast consists of tender and pink Speyside beef, and an impressive sharing board for two of Yorkshire pudding, beef fat garlic roasties, brisket mac n’ cheese, honey root veg, vegetable ecrase and a red wine gravy.

PORTER & RYE

Known for their beautifully dry-aged steaks and carefully crafted cocktails, Porter & Rye’s Sunday offering is all about indulgence. While it sits at a higher price tag of £25, it contains a mountain of deliciousness, consisting of Roast Beef & Braised Ox Cheek, bone marrow gravy, beef dripping Yorkshire puddings, honey glazed carrots, creamed cabbage with smoked pancetta, beef dripping & rosemary roast potatoes, roast garlic mash, charred shallot and buttered tenderstem broccoli. A true Sunday afternoon feast.

THE ISLAY INN

If all that sounds a bit too fancy for you and you like your roasts done more humbly but just as satisfying, I personally think that The Islay Inn offers a great option. For £15.95, their roast consists of slow braised Angus beef, crispy roast potatoes, mixed roast vegetables, a rich beef gravy and Yorkshire puddings the size of your head. I do recommend getting a side of their Mac n’ Cheese to share as well. Add a cold pint and enjoy a good old fashioned roast in a friendly setting.

What makes Stravaigin different to some of the other spots mentioned, is that much like its main menu, their Sunday roast changes to suit the seasons. Over the warmer summer months, their ‘Summer Roast’ consisted of blushing pink lamb rump with salsa verde, crispy potato, corn on the cob, almond & sumac salad with a yoghurt dressing. In the winter months though, it consists of a tender treacle cured beef rump with roast potatoes, glazed carrot, beef gravy, Yorkshire pudding and a side of broccoli and cauliflower cheese. There are veggie and vegan roasts available too, and when Stravaigin is all decked out for Christmas, it’s one of my favourite festive spots.
