Glasgow Doors Open Days Festival is an annual event in which over 100 historic buildings in the city invite you inside.  Behind the doors of theatres, museum, warehouses, breweries – the festival is a chance to celebrate Glasgow’s renowned architecture, hear more about its cultural heritage and increase awareness of just how much the city has to offer.

This year, the theme of the festival is Glasgow:Visionary City, where the organisers are asking participants ‘What type of city will Glasgow be in the future?’ It’s a timely question given that we are celebrating 850 years.  And festival-goers can share their thoughts over the four days.  Glasgow Doors Open Days is now in its 36th year and the featured events of guided tours, talks, and open buildings are as popular today as they were back in 1990s. As always, it’s one of the best events in Glasgow in September

Have you ever heard of the Sunday Assembly? I hadn’t and assumed this was a faith community. However, if you are not religious but are looking for a community to celebrate, well, life actually, the Glasgow Sunday Assembly is for you. This is a global secular movement ‘for wonder and good’.  The community meet in congregations, sing, support each other, hear inspirational talks and basically try to create positivity.

This September the Glasgow Sunday Assembly are hosting The Glasgow Gathering.  At the event, community members from oversees will join with local members for a weekend of activities.   With key-note speakers including Sir John Curtice, political scientist and Mike Stevenson, a motivational speaker, inspiration is key to the weekend.  There will also be live music, singing, interactive workshops and social activities.

The event will be held at the Pyramid in Anderston over four days.  Keen to attend the whole gathering, or drop in for a day to see what it’s about?  There are options to suit your needs.

And as events in Glasgow in September go, there are few more popular than this…

Ay Chihuahua! It’s only time for the annual West End Chili Cook Off.  And if you are one of those lucky chili-chomping signories/signorias who bagged a ticket, what is there in store for you? Westender were lucky enough to catch up with one of the stalwart contestants throwing their sombrero in the ring this year.  Inn Deep have been flexing their Habaneros for many a year now.

Zander Duncan, General Manager says

‘There’s a real community feel on Cook Off day; it’s great to watch people making their way around the West End in ponchos, eating chilli and drinking tequila. People go all-out on the costumes and bring their chihuahuas dressed up in tiny sombreros. Each venue brings its own personality and quirks to the competition, whether it’s in the decor or the flavour profile of the chilli. We’ve had a wild variety of entries over the years, one made by Sandy (owner, not chef!) himself in an all-nighter the day before the competition. This year, Cafe XO’s in the kitchen so we can relax knowing the pros are representing us.

The other thing is the Cook-Off’s just great value for money. For the price of the ticket you get to sample chilli from some of the best chefs in the West, explore new places and get the craic while listening to mariachi and wearing a big moustache.

New chef Andrew Manson from Cafe XO will be in charge of the Inn Deep entry this year.

‘Anyone who’s eaten with us so far knows we love vibrant flavours and specialise in meat finished over coals, which lends itself perfectly to the Cook-Off.

We’ll be slow-cooking meat on the bone for the best result, creating real depth of flavour and swapping our beloved umami for Mexican chipotle and anchos to create a rich, smoky chilli. Some of the other chefs who showcased alongside us at Meatopia recently are in the running so I’m keen to see how everyone ranks in the public vote!… Our experience of working with chefs like Gordon Ramsay and Jason Atherton have given us the best training to get the most out of our ingredients.’
