Gigs in Glasgow this November

By Greg Kane
Bahamas
Friday 7th November 7pm
Cottiers Theatre
Afie Jurvanen, aka Bahamas is a 40 something guitar playing singer/songwriter from Canada. He was an original member of the band Feist used on her infamous 2007 Apple iPod advert song ’1234’. His style of music confuses me. I think it’s Country/Soul/R’n’B. His telecaster guitar has just the right amount of country grit, but the grooves have soul in their soul, his voice sometimes reminds me of a young Joe Jackson or even Daryl Hall. There’s lots of boundary blurring going on here, but it makes for an enjoyable listen. I like it.
Him and his 5 piece band are out on a world tour supporting his 6th album ‘My Second Last Album’ released this year.

Billianne
Sunday 16th November 7pm
SWG3 Poetry Club
Often compared to a young Adele, Canadian singer-songwriter Billianne has emerged as one of the most captivating new voices in pop/folk this year. Hailing from Milton, Ontario, Billianne first gained international attention in 2021 when her cover of Tina Turner’s “The Best” went viral on TikTok. Should be a confusing first visit to Glasgow for her then. But what an effortlessly beautiful voice she has. I find her less showy and affected than Adele, she’s purer but has the power and the strength, it’s just that she calls upon them less often. She’s out on a short UK to promote the release of her debut album ‘Modes of transportation’.
Choice track: ‘Enough’
Holysseus Fly
Thursday 20th November 7:30pm
The Hug & Pint
Piano playing Holly Wellington, AKA Holysseus Fly is a Bristolian soul singer. In my experience this eccentric south western UK city has such an affect on people and Holysseus Fly could never really come from anywhere else. She’s highly proficient in what she does but there are oddities and abstractions all over the place in her performances and on her recordings which make her quite unique. But it’s her voice that holds it all together. It has such a wonderful soul character to it and she controls it with such precision, that’s rare. So she can use it like another instrument in her arsenal of keyboards and synths. And then there’s the interpretive dancing and the costumes. She’s definitely channeling Kate Bush when it comes to her on stage antics… a very compelling package is Holysseus Fly. A find.
Choice track: ‘Anchors’
