Top for a Weekend Wander
The Rail Yard is Glasgow’s newest farmers market, nestling between the River Kelvin and Gibson Street. The market gets its name as it sits on the site of the old rail line which was situated there. The site is home to permanent traders The Garden Shed, Uplands Roast Coffee and Lupo Pizza throughout the week. But when Saturday rolls around look out for West End names such as Big Bear Bakery, Locavore and Three Sisters Bake. The aim for the Rail Yard is to provide customers with direct access to local ‘Slow Food’ production and in doing so, is promoting sustainable traders.
Make sure to take a wander down the river for a coffee, a cake and a browse in the West End’s newest market.

Top for Scottish Pride
Piping Live and the World Pipe Bands Championship march their way into Glasgow again this August. Piping Live is the world’s biggest piping festival and is organised by The National Piping Centre. The event is now in its 22nd year and attracts over 30,000 people annually. As well as usual events at the Piping Centre and the Royal Concert Hall, the organisers have an exciting new outdoor stage at the Piping Centre on McPhater Street. With international performers gracing the stages throughout the week, the pipers will be raising the roofs. Then just as Piping Live enters the weekend, The World Pipe Band Championship commences. It’s the ultimate accolade for all Pipe Bands to compete, attending from near and far. As well as the event in Glasgow Green, look out for the rehearsal spaces in Kelvingrove of a morning stroll.

Top for Tourist at Home
Every year in August, I become a tourist, right here at home. The reason I do this is so I can take myself doon the watter aboard The Waverley. The last sea- going paddle steamer has its home berthed beside the Science Centre and you may have caught a glimpse of it making its way up and down the Clyde. But when did you last go on a cruise?
It is entirely worth it! The Glasgow and Clyde Coast Summer Excursions run from the end of June till the end of August with some glorious cruises. Steam round the Holy Isle and Ailsa Craig or cruise the Kintyre coast. How about an Evening Sunset Cruise down the River Clyde? The steamer started its preservation back in 1975 – 50 years ago. And the interior woodwork is perfect, visiting the engine room is awe inspiring. And that’s before mentioning the outrageously delicious fish and chips.
There is something magical about the Waverley, something fiercely Glaswegian. Get a ticket, feel the wind in your hair and see Clyde coastal landmarks from a wholly different perspective.
