Corporate Events are Climbing Up

Corporate days out in Glasgow are on the up. By Diana Kiernander
At time of writing this, I am just back from a festive night out with some work colleagues. Curiously, due to spread-out sites and disparate working hours, I have only met most of these co-workers less than a handful of times. They are all lovely girls though and we had lots of fun. (Actually tequila. We had lots of tequila. But that’s kinda the same thing). Anyway, the success of this rare night out with work pals was a wonderful reminder that, even if we are all stuck in a midwinter slump of wet weather and the soul sucking cost of living chaos, it is still a good idea to get together with others and crystallise those 9-5 connections.
So Westender has gone out to uncover some corporate hospitality gems. Here are the places and experiences you and your company should go in 2023 if you want to break the glass ceiling of socialising with your staff.

Partick Thistle FC

And so, kicking off (ahem!) the proceedings is the hospitality package at Partick Thistle. Located at Firhill Stadium in Maryhill, it’s the most resolutely westend of venues on the list. And for die-hard Jags, splashing out on a box seat means you can soak up the atmosphere from 12:45PM on match day, mingle with the management team, enjoy a special lunch, be part of guest interviews, MOTM  (Man of the Match)presentations and generally get embedded in this uniquely west end football dreamscape.
I’m feeling a bit of a fraud though, as I walk round the stadium in the cold to chat with Lesley Anne Webb, Commercial Manager, since football is just not my thing and Glasgow clubs in particular are a bit of mystery. But when we meet, I get to see all the special touches that make it feel like a real family affair to be at a game. Like the new Gaelic signage on display all across the stadium, something that taps into the local drive to promote the language in sport and highlights just how many of their supporters are learning Gaelic already.
And then there’s the limited edition, single malt whisky (probably gone by the time you read this!) that was launched in October ‘22 to mark 10 years since promotion to the Premier League. Choosing a Hospitality package day out at Firhill could be just the way to unite your own work team’s day out.

Gleddoch, Golf & Spa Resort

In comparison, if stunning scenery and tranquil countryside adventures sound more like your team’s vibe, then aim to head around half an hour out of the city to the Gleddoch Golf & Spa Resort. It’s a sophisticated, sparkling year-round destination venue for couples, families and wedding parties and it can also cater for your corporate away days in style. As a hotel, its origins date back to the shipbuilding era of the 1920’s, and over time it’s played host to royalty and dignitaries.

After a period of changing hands, rebranding and refurbishing, it’s now a modern, prestigious countryside resort, perfect for sparking conversations and ideas within your company as you relax, recharge and brainstorm.  In addition, it’s got banquet halls, garden room conference suites and a 360 acre golf course, suitable for all abilities. The soothing, inspirational setting attracts large and small businesses, from all around the Clyde and beyond, looking to get their team out of the office doldrums.
The corporate arm of the  hotel partners with ‘In Your Element’ outdoor experience specialists who are renowned for creating stand-out team-building activities, including archery, clay pigeon shooting and even mini Highland games courses (surely a big hit with any overseas corporate customers sampling Scotland).

Flexing those team building muscles in such a beautiful space is bound to make you thirsty, so it’s just as well the incredible range of corporate activities can also be tailored to include cocktail making master classes or gin, wine and whisky flight tasting sessions too. And for those of you who like to work with a calm mind, there’s outdoor yoga too. I wouldn’t mind joining a morning meeting in an idyllic space like this.

GoKarting at Larkhall

Finally, this one is for the thrill seekers and the adrenaline junkies. It’s our last stop on the corporate days out trail in Glasgow. If this sounds like a bit of you, suggest to your colleagues that you all head to a Go-Karting day out at Larkhall. For team building with a high-speed, competitive edge, try track racing at the longest outdoor circuit in Scotland.
Groups of 8 or more can book in to take part in high performance relay races and compete in heats to cover a huge number of laps around the course. There’s a variety of different packages available, including Mini, Standard and Grand Prix experiences. Arrive & Drive  and Iron Man Endurance Formats too. Corporate bookings are welcome, with routes designed to create as much distance as possible around the track.

Everyone who takes part gets a safety demo, cool driving tips, with marshalls stationed throughout the route to help everything run smoothly. It’s a beloved track that has even been a backdrop for unconventional client meet-ups and company conferences. It’s very high speed, very daring and very Lewis Hamilton (he visited the Larkhall go/kart track as a young racer boy) I think this is probably my favourite corporate event suggestion. I like the hint of danger and I like the association with a Grand Prix great!
