Off The Beatson Tracks 2025

Is there anything better for the soul than a good old summer walk, taking in the Clyde, the Botanics, Kelvingrove?  Well yes, if you are doing it in aid of the Beatson Cancer Charity!

We all have a favourite charity, one that has a place in our hearts, the one we will always get our hands in our pockets for.  And then there are the charities that are just part of the fabric of Glasgow, that we will all get behind.  That’s The Beatson Cancer Charity (BCC).

At any time in someone’s life, a cancer diagnosis is devastating – devastating for them and devastating for their loved ones.  The Beatson Cancer Charity is there to support: a shoulder to cry on with specialist nurses, services, and a wealth of therapies in their wellbeing centre.  Coping with Cancer takes strength and you’re not alone with BCC.

The Beatson Cancer Charity

The Beatson Cancer Charity was formed in 2014, merging Friends of the Beatson and The Beatson Oncology Centre Fund. Some of the main services are the Wellbeing Centre, the Befriending Service and the Specialist Health and Work Service.

The Wellbeing Centre is at the heart of the BCC ethos.  A place of peace, of warmth, of care. Complementary therapies are available here but can also be provided for inpatients and outpatients too.  The BCC also provides services such as wig fitting and befriending.

The Befriending Service is a resource provided through a telephone service.  Having a regular chat to a befriender can often ensure the person dealing with cancer feels just a little less alone.  Many people like the service as it’s an opportunity to share feelings that they do not want to share with loved ones. The service is also available for carers or family.

The Specialist Health and Work Service (SHAWS) is a team of specialist workers experienced in helping with work related issues for individuals navigating their cancer journey. Returning to work, your employer needing some advice on how to support your return?  This is the service for you.

Best Foot Forward

But of course, these incredible care services require funds, and the BCC is one of the most visible fundraisers we know.  Taking part in the annual Kiltwalk, Tough Mudder, 10Ks and Marathons, the yellow and black merch associated with the charity is instantly recognisable.

One of the biggest fundraising events for the BCC is the annual Off the Beatson Track.  This 10K ‘stroll’ starts off every year at the Riverside Museum, with the conga-line of participants turning the main arteries of the West End yellow.  For the past 11 years, over 20,000 entrants have taking part in the walk.  That’s included those on a Cancer journey, their friends and families, colleagues and more than a few hundred dogs!

2024 – Ten Year Birthday

Last year, Off the Beatson Track marked its 10th anniversary with its best year yet.  With 2,700 walkers, an incredible £200,000 was raised.  Taking on the 10K walk can be challenging – especially when the weather is against you, as it was in 2024.  But the participants spirits remained buoyant thanks to entertainment at every kilometre marker.  With DJs, food trucks, even a Bubbleologist, the walkers completed the route despite the wet conditions.

In 2025, the event will be hosted by Scottish Television’s Laura Boyd and Heart FM’s David Farrell.  As with previous years, there will be entertainment along the 10K route, with an encouraging DJ set at the finish line.

Yellow is Mandatory

But, of course to brighten up the route, those yellow t-shirts are a must!  The BCC is asking that if you’ve been a walker before and your t-shirt is in good condition – why not wear it again.  You will of course still get your trendy wristband.

So, if you have 6.5 miles in you, it’s a win -win situation. A walk, a chat, maybe a boogie?  And all in aid of an amazing charity.
