Singing is good for the soul and especially therapeutic at the moment during these uncertain times.
Merchant Voices is a community choir based in the Glasgow City Halls. Rehearsals are on a Wednesday evening between 6:30 and 8:30 pm. No auditions are necessary to join and although reading music is an advantage, it is in no way a requirement.
In 2020, the Choir was rehearsing two pieces to sing at the Glasgow Music Festival on Tuesday 17th March when everything stopped because of the pandemic. However, one week later, on Wednesday 25th March, undaunted, our Musical Director/Conductor, Dr Stephen Langston launched our “Virtual Choir” and we have been going strong every week since then.
Thanks to Dr Langston’s hard work, commitment and enthusiasm, we all still very much look forward to Wednesday evenings.
We are still singing pieces, obviously, but we are also doing quizzes, karaoke and hearing from choir members about what they have been doing during the week. Our rehearsals are great fun with lots of laughs.
Our virtual Christmas Concert went live on Wednesday 16th December and was great fun to take part in and also a great success. We were delighted to see so many members returning for our spring session but at the same time we are always on the lookout for new members and we feel that there must be lots of people out there who would love to sing and who would benefit greatly from joining us.
We just want people who love singing to come along and be part of the fun.
At present, our Wednesday evening meetings are held virtually via Zoom video conferencing which is very straightforward to take part in. Once you receive the Zoom invitation it is very easy to join in and there is always help on hand to get you started.
We are a very friendly bunch, and we would be delighted to see some new faces so why not join us online any Wednesday evening!
Our new autumn/winter session will start in September and hopefully we will be able to meet up face to face. However, this will depend entirely on current restrictions for choirs being lifted. In the event that this does not happen, we will continue to meet virtually every Wednesday evening.
One way or the other Merchant Voices will carry on singing, so please come along and join us!
