Square Bar

Tucked away in Broomhill is a little eatery that has become a focal point for the local community. Like many restaurants, the pandemic has caused a variety of issues, but The Square Bar owners took it as an opportunity to give the restaurant a facelift and upgrade their outdoor dining area.

The new interior has a stylish, classic vibe that feels both timeless and modern, and the raised outdoor area covered with fairy lights makes a perfect space to enjoy a cocktail and a late lunch on a (now somewhat rare) sunny afternoon.

I headed down on Saturday afternoon to sample their menu, starting, of course, with a cocktail. There is a varied cocktail menu of classic cocktails, perfect serves and carafes of gin cocktails. I went for a classic French Martini and it did not disappoint.

Moving on to the food, there were plenty of dishes on the menu that caught my eye, from haggis bon bons to a sharing rosemary and garlic camembert. The truffled creamy mushrooms on toasted Italian bread were a highlight, with a lovely, rich garlic and mushroom flavour, although the truffle was on the mild side – a bit more truffle flavour would have brought this dish to another level. I would probably give the salt & chilli seafood a miss – I tried it and it left a lot to be desired sadly. Next time, I’ll go for the haggis bon bons.

The mains offer a range of classic dishes, from fish and chips to beef burgers, but the standout main course for me was the rump of lamb with sauteed potatoes, charred asparagus and chimichurri. The lamb was perfectly cooked and tender and the chimichurri provided brightness and acidity. If you are a lamb fan, I would definitely recommend this dish!

There are some other interesting sounding dishes on the menu if you want something a bit different, such as Slow Cooked Pork Cheeks with celeriac chips, spinach, shallots and an apple cider jus – perfect as we move into autumn.

The Square Bar and Restaurant also offers a varied breakfast and brunch, as well as great value lunch set menu, and deals such as Sunday Roasts for £14.50 and Steak Nights during the week from £45 per couple.
